After falling behind two sets against the Pirates, the Presbyterian College volleyball team mounted a furious rally, taking the third and fourth sets to force a fifth. East Carolina stopped the Blue Hose momentum in the fifth set, winning 15-6, to take the 32- victory in the first match of the Davidson Wildcat Classic being held Sept. 4-5, in Davidson, N.C. ECU won the first and second sets, 25-10 and 25-13, with PC winning three and four, 25-23 and 25-23.

PC drops to 1-4 on the year, while East Carolina improves to 3-0. The Blue Hose face host Davidson Saturday at 12 p.m., before rounding out tournament play at 4 p.m., against Hampton.

Leading PC was Ashton Stewart with 12 kills and a .235 hitting percentage, with Rachel Elshoff close behind with 11 kills on the afternoon and 11 digs. Mikayla Register led the team in digs with 14, while Jaclyn Brewington held the PC margin in assists with 23 to go along with a match-high six service aces.

Ashton Mares paced the Pirates with 19 kills, with three other players in double-digit kills.

PC recorded a .070 hitting percentage, compared to .314 for ECU, with the Pirates coming away with 11.0 blocks, to the Blue Hose’s 5.0.

After recording 13 kills and 12 errors in the first two set losses, PC fought back with 21 kills in the next two to hold off the Pirates and force a fifth set. ECU would not be denied in the fifth, jumping out to a 7-1 lead before taking the 15-6 win for the match victory.
