The Presbyterian College volleyball team recorded a season-high in hitting percentage to take the 3-0 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Blue Hose took the three sets by scores of 25-9, 27-25, and 25-21.
PC, which improves to 12-14 overall and 7-6 in the Big South, returns home for its regular-season finale with a Nov. 14 contest against Winthrop. First serve is set for 7 p.m., with the seniors being recognized prior to the match. Gardner-Webb falls to 12-18, 5-7.
The Blue Hose hit a team-high .345, recording 48 kills and just eight errors. Kelly Berryman paced the Blue Hose with 13 kills and two block assists. She was supported by Ashton Stewart with 11 kills and Rachel Hall with 10. Ashtin Frank added 37 assists, while Mary Trimpe collected 22 digs, as well as five service aces.
Gardner-Webb recorded 34 kills and posted a .177 hitting percentage. Brianna Starr led the team with 11 kills and a .273 hitting percentage. Heather Feldman added 30 assists, while Anna Pashkova came away with 17 digs.
Tied 4-4 early in the first set, the Blue Hose went on a 12-1 run, highlighted by four kills from Rachel Elshoff, to take a dominating16-5 lead. Gardner-Webb scored off an Esposito kill, but it was PC with the next five points, capped by two Berryman kills, to go up by 15, 21-6. The Runnin’ Bulldogs scattered a few more points, but it was PC to come away with the 25-9 first set win.
Gardner-Webb took a 12-12 tie and turned it into a 18-14 lead in the second set before PC rallied with a 6-2 run, using two kills from Berryman, to tie the set back at 20-20. A back and forth battle ensued with PC taking a 24-23 lead off a bad GWU set. A Bulldog kill by Starr and a block by Tyler Cockrell and Montour gave Gardner-Webb its first set point of the match at 25-24. PC responded with three straight kills, on by Elshoff and the final two by Berryman, to quell the rally and take the 27-25 second set win.
PC opened the third set with a 6-3 lead before GWU clawed back over the next several points to tie it up at 10-10. Tied again at 16-16, Gardner Webb tallied the next two points to take an 18-16 lead. The Blue Hose knotted the set at 20-20 off kills by Stewart and Elshoff, as well as a block assists from Frank and Berryman. PC continued to roll, scoring the set’s next five of six points, including the final two off Berryman kills, to take the 25-21 third set and match win.
