CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College volleyball team overcame a 25-16 loss in the first set to the High Point Panthers by winning the next three sets by scores of 25-17, 26-24, and 25-17 on Saturday night in Templeton Center.
Rachel Hall (Roswell, Ga.) led the Blue Hose with 18 kills and three assisted blocks. Ashtin Frank (Bloomington, Ill.) checked in with 43 assists, 12 digs, and seven assisted blocks. Kelly Berryman (Normal, Ill.) recorded 11 kills and four assisted blocks in the win, while Rachel Elshoff (Rochester, Ill.) finished the game with 11 digs and eight kills.
Chelsea Davis and Haley Barnes paced the Panthers with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Wavie Chin recorded 18 digs, while Kristin Heldt had 14 digs and nine kills. Gabi Mirand finished the match with 39 total assists.
The Panthers led for entirely the first set, extending their lead by as much as 14 points. The Blue Hose fought back and cut the deficit to only eight points on one occasion, but were unable to catch the visitors as they went on to win the first 25-16. Hall had six kills in the first set, while Mary Trimpe (Normal, Ill.), Frank, and Elshoff had five digs apiece.
The two teams played back-and-forth for the first three points of the second set, but the hosts quickly scored four unanswered points to force a High Point timeout. The Blue Hose began to pull away from the Panthers from that point, as they went on to take the set 25-17, led by Berryman’s four kills and four combined blocks by Frank and Stewart.
PC withstood a High Point comeback in the third set to hold them off and win 26-24. The Blue Hose led by six points on four occasions in the match, but the Panthers rallied with six unanswered points to tie the set at 24-24. The Blue Hose scored the final two points of the match on a kill by Stewart and an attack error by the Panthers to seal the third set victory. Hall and Elshoff had six and five kills in the third set, respectively.
The Blue Hose led the entire fourth set, extending their lead to as much as eight near the end of the set at 24-16. Hall led in the fourth set with four kills, while Elshoff and Berryman evenly combined for four kills.
The Blue Hose will head to Virginia next weekend for two away Big South Conference matchups. First, on Friday, Oct. 24, PC will play Liberty at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 25, Radford will welcome PC for a 4 p.m. game.
