The Presbyterian College volleyball team rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to take the third set, but fell in the fourth as Gardner-Webb took the 3-1 win in Big South action Friday night at the Templeton Center. The Runnin’ Bulldogs took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-19, before PC won the third, 25-18. GWU took the fourth and final set 25-21.
The Blue Hose drop to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the Big South, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs improve to 9-13, 2-2. PC next hosts UNC Asheville Saturday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m., at Templeton Center.
Leading PC was Kelly Berryman with 19 kills, followed by Johna Robbins with 15 and Ashton Stewart with 12. Ashtin Frank tallied 47 assists, while Mary Trimpe came away with 22 digs. PC recorded 59 kills off 153 attacks for a .170 hitting percentage.
Gardner-Webb was led by Brianna Starr with 14 kills, followed by Tyra Montour with 12 and Tyler Cockrell with 10. GWU recorded 50 kills and had a .228 hitting percentage.
Tied 4-4 in the first set, PC exploded for four unanswered, helped in part to kills by Ashton Stewart and Robbins, as well as two Bulldog attack errors. Following a timeout Gardner-Webb rallied with a 4-1 run, off two kills from Starr, to tie the set at 9-9.
Tied again at 11-11, the Runnin’ Bulldogs used a 6-1 run to build a 17-12 lead. Two kills by Berryman and Robbins, as well as blocks by Berryman and Halle Tripp, rallied the Blue Hose back to a tie, 18-18. After a Starr kill, Stewart tied the set at 19-19, before Gardner-Webb tallied the next six in a row, helped by three PC attack errors and a Cockrell kill, to take set one, 25-19.
Kills by Robbins, Berryman and Stewart helped PC take the early 6-4 lead in the second set. GWU tied the set at 7-7 and proceeded to run up a 13-7 lead off the 9-2 run. Gardner-Webb extended its lead to 20-12 and looked to be in control until a 6-2 run, off kills from Robbins, Rachel Elshoff and Berryman, led PC back to within four, 18-22. The Blue Hose only managed one more point, a Tripp kill, as the Bulldogs picked up the next three of four points to take the 25-19 second set win.
PC opened the third set with an 11-6 lead, off kills from Berryman, Robbins, Stewart and Elshoff. The Blue Hose extended it to 18-11, before taking a 10-point, 23-13 lead.
A kill by Berryman gave PC set point, but the Runnin’ Bulldogs rallied for three straight to cut the lead to 24-18. Berryman ended the rally with her 12th kill of the night to give PC the 25-18 third set win.
A close fourth set early, the Bulldogs opened up a 16-13 lead, before PC fought back to tie the set at 17-17 off three straight Berryman kills. Montour responded with a kill to give GWU the one-point lead again, before Elshoff tied it again at 18-18.
Tied 19-19, the Runnin’ Bulldogs took a 20-19 lead off a Dyson and Cockrell block. GWU extended the lead to 21-19 off a Judge kill before PC cut the lead to one, 21-22. That would be it as Gardner-Webb took the next three, including back to back Montour kills, to take the fourth set and match, 25-12.
