The Presbyterian College softball team travels to Rock Hill, S.C., May 9-12, to take part in the Big South Tournament, presented by Musco Lighting. The Blue Hose enter as the #8-seed and will face #9-seed Charleston Southern at 9 a.m. The winner will face #1-seed Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m. All games will be broadcast live on the Big South Network, sponsored by State Farm, at www.BigSouthSports.com, as well as on WKRI-FM i91.9.
The Blue Hose enter with a 22-30 overall record and a 7-16 mark in the league. PC will face a familiar opponent Thursday as the Blue Hose and Bucs faced each other this past week, with CSU taking two games, 7-6 and 7-5. The third game of the series was rained out.
Four players are averaging over a .300 batting average with Jill McLean leading the way with a .339. Erin Ruff has a .329, while Cat Tarvin sits with a .316. Tera Powell rounds out the group with her .313.
PC likes to share the wealth in RBI with all but one starter collecting at least 12. Four have recorded at least 30 with Kersten Legacki and Shelby Petik leading the way with 35. Ruff has 32, while Tarvin has 30.
With a team-leading 11 home runs this season, Petik is 111th in the nation. As a team, the Blue Hose have 44 home runs, or almost one a game (0.85), to put them 66th in the country.
With the extra-inning win over Western Carolina April 24, the Blue Hose equaled last year's mark of 20 wins. The 22 wins so far is the second most in PC Division I history and is just six from tying the mark of 28 set in 2011
PC is 15-0 when leading after the fourth inning, 13-1 after the fifth and 14-1 after the sixth. The Blue Hose are 9- 2 when flawless defensively, but 5-11 when committing one error and 8-17 when committing at least two. The Blue Hose are 17-9 when it gets on the board first but just 5-21 when the opponents take the first lead.
Offensively, PC has made tremendous strides since last season. The Blue Hose eclipsed the home run total from 2012 by 21, 44-23 and have 61 more RBI, 216-155. PC surpassed the doubles mark, 68-36 and have 39 more hits, 380-341. Overall, batting average is better as well, .272-.247, as well as slugging pct., .425 - .336.
