USC Upstate scored six runs off three home runs in the sixth inning, leading to a 9-1 win over the Presbyterian College softball team in action this afternoon at Cyrill Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Blue Hose dropped to 17-17 overall, while the Spartans improved to 29-3. The Blue Hose host Campbell in a three-game series this weekend with a doubleheader set for Friday, April 5 at 2 p.m.
Kersten Legacki provided PC with its lone hit and score with a solo home run in the second inning, her sixth of the season, to cut Upstate's three-run lead to two, 3-1.
The Spartans opened the game with two doubles and two singles to take the early 3-0 lead, before Legacki's solo shot.
USC Upstate used a two-run home run by Maddison Kieffer, a three-run homer by Lindsay Kelly and a solo shot by Meredith Barnes, as part of a six-run fourth inning, to give the Spartans a 9-1 lead. Jamie Ujvari, who came in relief in the fifth inning, struck out the side to preserve the eight-run win.
Hannah Alexander struck out five in a 4.0 inning effort as the Upstate starter earned the win to go to 13-2 on the year. Kelsey Barnette threw 3.1 innings for the Blue Hose and gave up seven runs off eight hits for the loss (2-3).
