CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball
team earned three Big South Conference honors on Monday, led by head coach Ronny
Fisher earning the Coach of the Year award as voted by the League's head
coaches and media panel. Karlee Taylor (Asheville, N.C.) was also voted
Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the League's sports information directors and
Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) was selected to the All-Big South
Conference Second Team.
Fisher, in his fifth year at the helm, set the school record
for wins in the Division-I era as the Blue Hose finished with a 19-10 overall
record. In its first year that it is
eligible for the Big South Conference Tournament Championship, Presbyterian
College enters as the No. 3 seed. The
Blue Hose won a school-record 14 Big South games during the 2012-13 season and
posted their first ever win over Liberty on Jan. 3. PC got another monumental win this season as
it recorded its first-ever win over an ACC opponent, downing Clemson on Nov.
11. Fisher notched 16 top-votes to
finish with 56 points from the panel as Winthrop's Kevin Cook received two
first-place votes and 26 points.
Taylor, a junior guard, ranks second in the country in
three-point field goal percentage, shooting at a 48.5 percent clip from
distance. Taylor needs just two more treys to tie for PC's single-season
three-point field goal record and boasts a 3.73 grade point average as a
mathematics major and a secondary education minor. A two-time member of the Big
South Conference Presidential Honor Roll, the guard earned a spot on the
2011-12 All-Academic Team as well.
Pietrowski, a senior center, leads the Big South in field
goal percentage (56.8 percent) and free-throw percentage (86.2) while ranking
in the overall top 20 in scoring (13) and rebounding (16). The senior posted
double-doubles in wins over Campbell and UNC Asheville this season and is one
of seven players in PC history with 1,200 points and 600 rebounds. Pietrowski
holds the school's Division I records in scoring, scoring average, rebounds,
field goals made, field goals attempted and field goal percentage.
The third-seeded Blue Hose will play in the Friday
quarterfinals at the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championships at The HTC
Center. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. and
PC will face the winner of Wednesday's game between No. 6 Radford and No. 11
UNC Asheville.
