FARMVILLE, Va. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (18-10,
13-4 Big South) plays its final game of the regular season on Saturday with a 2
p.m. matchup at Longwood. The Blue Hose enter with a five-game winning streak thanks
to a 57-40 victory at Radford on Thursday night. PC sewed up a first-round bye
to next week's VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championships with two wins last
week and can earn the No. 2 seed with a Saturday win and a Winthrop loss.
PC trails in the all-time series, 1-4, snapping a four-game
losing streak to the Lancers with a 71-69 home win at Templeton Center on
January 10. Dria David scored a career-high 22 points in the victory. The Blue
Hose will aim for their first-ever win at Longwood's campus in the team's first
trip since the 2007-08 season when Longwood won, 73-58.
Longwood brings a 11-17 record into Saturday and an 8-9
marker in Big South play. The Lancers raced to a hot start in the Big South,
going 6-1 (with the loss coming at PC) before dropping eight straight. The
squad has won its last two and is led by Crystal Smith's 14.7 points per game
and Chelsea Coward's 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.
In the last five games (over which PC is 5-0), Mariah
Pietrowski leads the Blue Hose with 16.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Four
players average in double figures and Karlee Taylor chips in 15.2 points,
averaging 3.8 three-pointers per game over the last five. PC is also shooting
51.9 percent as a team (112-216).
PC picked up its fifth straight win in style on Thursday
night, handling Radford at the Dedmon Center in a 57-40 victory. PC held
Radford to a season-low point total in its first-ever win at the Dedmon Center,
snapping a five-game losing streak at the building. The result also matched
PC's longest winning streak of the season.
Head coach Ronny Fisher's 50th career win on Thursday (30th
win in the Big South) moved him closer to second place in the PC record books.
His 37th on December 11 moved him past Jessica Vanco's (2004-08) 36 wins into
sole possession of fourth place in PC history. Next in his sights are the 73
wins attained by both Randy Randall and Byron Rucker that tie both men for
second.
After the conclusion of Saturday's action, the Blue Hose
will find out their Friday quarterfinal opponent for the VisitMyrtleBeach.com
Big South Conference Championship at The HTC Center in Conway, S.C.
The Blue Hose have allowed an opponent to shoot over 40
percent only twice out of the last nine games. PC boasts a 17-2 record when
opponents shoot under 40 percent, which included all of the team's wins this season
before PC beat High Point on Saturday, who shot 40.3 percent.
PC has recorded 10 or more assists in 24 games and enters
Saturday with an 18-6 record when doing so. The team also enjoys a 16-3 record
when scoring 50 or more points.
