CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's tennis team
kicks off its spring season on Saturday afternoon with matchup at South
Carolina at 4 p.m.
The Blue Hose enter the spring at 2-0 after knocking off
Spartanburg Methodist College and Newberry in September.
PC will aim to improve on its success from last season that
saw the squad become the first No. 7 seed to win a match in the Big South
Conference Championship, upsetting No. 2 UNC Asheville and No. 3 Coastal
Carolina on the way to an historic runner-up finish.
A trio of seniors returns for the Blue Hose as Andrew
Brigham (Birmingham, England), William O'Connell (Nadi, Fiji) and Edward Snead
IV (Greenwood, S.C.) head into their final seasons at PC. O'Connell set a new school
Division I record last season with his 14 singles wins, primarily at the second
and third flights. Brigham grabbed three Big South wins and Snead proved to bolster the lineup throughout the season.
The Blue Hose also return their top two players in Rafael
Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) and Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.). Mills compiled
a 4-2 record in Big South Conference matches while Berghaus went 9-7 in top
flight-matches. Both cracked the 10-win plateau as well.
Gonzalo Asis (Madrid, Spain) and Nathan Crocker (Clinton,
S.C.) both enter their junior seasons with Berghaus and Mills, providing
reliable depth and experience to a seasoned Blue Hose lineup.
Three newcomers join the squad in P.H. Broyhill (Hickory,
N.C.), Danny Bruce (Marietta, Ga.) and Steven Weaver (Charleston, S.C.).
Broyhill, a two-time all-state and four-time all-conference selection, went
undefeated as a senior at Christ School and served as team captain for all four
years. Weaver won region three times at Bishop England High School and finished
as a runner-up in the Lower State Championship. Bruce came to PC ranked as a
four-star recruit by way of a No. 88 national ranking and a No. 22 ranking in
the Southeast and guided his Walton High School squad to four region
championships and two state runner-up finishes.
GoBlueHose.com will have results and recaps from all of PC's
matches this season.
