The Presbyterian College volleyball team combined for 30 kills and just two errors in two games to break open a 1-1 deadlock and defeat Georgetown, 3-1, in its final game of the Holiday Inn Charleston/Mt. Pleasant Tournament held this weekend in Charleston, S.C. PC won the games 25-15, 23-25, 25-10 and 25-8.
The Blue Hose improve to 3-10, while Georgetown falls to 6-6.
PC hit 12 kills in game one, 14 in game two and 15 in the final two games to earn the win.
Allison Brown led the Blue Hose in nearly perfect fashion, tallying 16 kills and no errors for a .533 hitting percentage. Presley Mabrey followed close behind with 15 kills and just two errors for .406. Mabrey paced the team in digs with 20 as well.
As a team, PC posted 56 kills for a .392 hitting percentage. Georgetown totaled 38 kills for a .092 hitting percentage. The Blue Hose posted 10.0 total blocks and held Georgetown without any.
PC led from start to finish in game one, earning the 25-15 win. Trailing 3-8 early, Georgetown used a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to two, 8-10. PC responded with a 6-1 run, capped by a solo block by Andrea Barman, to go up 16-9. Georgetown got as close five, 12-17, but scored only three more points as the Blue Hose spotted eight to take the 25-15 win.
Game two saw 15 ties, the last coming at 23-23. Both teams stayed within a point of each other until, at 15-15, the Blue Hose used a kill by Mabrey and two Hoya miscues, to build an 18-15 lead. Both team traded points and down by two at 20-22, Georgetown posted back to back kills to tie the game at 22-22. After the teams traded points, Georgetown rallied at the end, taking the final two points to win game two 25-23.
PC dropped the first point of game three, butt won the seven of eight points, capped off by three Brown kills, to take a 7-2 lead. A kill by Berryman and two blocks by Elizabeth Miler increased PC's lead to 10-3.
Up 11-5, Mabrey posted back to back kills to give PC the 13-5 lead. It was part of a 14-5 run that saw PC rack up nine kills, highlighted by two from Mabrey and Kelly Berryman, who hit the last two in a row to give PC the 25-10 win in game three.
Brown led the Blue Hose in the game four opener, posting two kills to lead PC to a 6-0 lead. After Georgetown got on the board, PC responded with three more kills to go up 9-1, forcing a Georgetown timeout.
The Hoyas cut the margin to seven at 3-10, but a Berryman and Mabrey kill drove PC back up to 12-3. Mabrey continued the PC offensive explosion with back to back kills as the Blue Hose increased their lead to 14-4.
A PC service error and a Georgetown kill cut the Blue Hose lead to eight, 14-6. PC took a 20-7 lead off three Georgetown attack errors and two kills. Ahead 22-8, Brown tallied two kills and Barman added another as PC took the final three points to take the 25-8 game four win.
PC opens Big South play when it travels to Charleston Southern to take on the Bucs Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. The Blue Hose take on Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. the next day at 1 p.m.
