CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's soccer begins Big South Conference play with a road trip to the state of Virginia for a pair of matches. The Blue Hose visit Radford on Thursday night before heading to VMI to play the Keydets on Saturday afternoon. PC looks to build on a two-match winning streak thanks to back-to-back shutouts over USC Upstate (2-0) and The Citadel (1-0).
Radford enters Thursday's game with a 5-3-0 record. The Highlanders last played on Sunday, September 18, when they dropped a 3-0 match to Old Dominion that snapped a three-match win streak. The streak included victories over Longwood (1-0), Tennessee Tech (3-1) and Alabama A&M (4-0). In terms of common opponents, Radford topped Francis Marion, 2-0. Julie Ruh'e leads the team with four goals and two assists while Mary Wiley tops the Highlanders in game-winning goals (two).
VMI enters Thursday with a 3-4-1 record before hosting UNC Asheville on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Keydets bring a two-match losing streak into the week after losses to USC Upstate (3-2) and Longwood (1-0). VMI began the season with a 4-3 double-overtime win over Howard and has also beaten Southern Virginia (2-0) and UMBC (2-0). Simone Jimenez's four goals and three assists give her the lead in points. Sarah Strand also boasts four goals on the year as well.
The Blue Hose will look for their first win over Radford since beginning the all-time series with a 3-1 victory in Radford in 2007. Since then, PC has gone 0-2-1 against the Highlanders-including a 2-1 loss in Clinton last year. The Blue Hose have found success against VMI, going 3-1-0 all-time and shutting the Keydets out by a 2-0 margin in 2010.
Goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson earned Defensive Player of the Week honors this week for her eight-save shutout performance against The Citadel on September 20. The effort also helped her set a new career record.
TopDrawerSoccer.com named junior midfielder Alice Blackwell to its Top 20 women's soccer players in the Big South Conference. Blackwell appeared on the list at No. 19 and has played in all nine matches.
PC secured its second win of the year and second win in a row with a 1-0 blanking of The Citadel on September 20. Stephanie Allen scored her first career goal on assists from Taylor Patti (a career first) and Gracie Boswell. Sarah Beth made a season-high eight saves, including six in the first half, to secure the shutout. The Blue Hose have not been scored on in 200:13, dating back to the team's loss to Mercer on September 16.
The Blue Hose wrap up their road trip with a visit to UNC Asheville on October 4 before returning home to kick off a three-match homestand, beginning with a Saturday night contest against Campbell on October 8.
