CHARLESTON, S.C. - Despite three student-athletes in double figures for
kills, the Presbyterian College volleyball team was unable to defeat the
College of Charleston Tuesday evening, falling by a 3-0 score (20-25, 19-25,
23-25).
The Blue Hose now stand at 2-3 on the young season while the Cougars improve to
5-3.
Head coach Chris Belshe's team was led by Presley Mabrey's 12 kills. Senior
Lisa Shelley had a double double with 10 kills and 10 digs while fellow
fourth-year player Amanda Kettles also notched 10 kills. Kettles continued her
torrid attack, hitting .412 for the night.
Redshirt-senior Kilee Ruppe dished out 34 assists on the night. Senior Ashley
Dunlap got low for 10 digs, tying Shelley for tops on the team. Rookie Andrea
Barman stuffed two shots by herself and assisted on another. Haley Thurmond
assisted on two blocks.
For the match, PC accounted for 39 kills compared to 34 by the College of
Charleston. However, the Blue Hose hit just .081 while the home squad tallied a
.282 attack percentage.
In the first set, PC took a 6-3 lead as Kettles sliced the defense with a
superb serve. An attack error gave the Cougars back the ball. The Blue Hose
took a 9-8 lead on a kill by Barman. However, the College of Charleston reeled
off four points for a 12-9 lead, forcing a time-out by PC.
Trailing 15-11, Shelley's kill pulled the team within three, but the Cougars
put together back-to-back points for a 17-12 advantage. The Blue Hose cut it to
four at 23-19, but could get no closerin the 25-20 loss.
In the second set, the squads played even through the first 18 points as it was
tied at nine apiece. A 4-8-1 run by the Cougars, coming mostly on miscues by
PC, gave the squad a lead it would not relinquish in the 25-19 victory.
After falling behind 2-0 in the third set, Belshe's team regained its
composure, tying the score at 10 on a ball handling error by Kallie McKown. Although
the College of Charleston took a 17-14 lead, an attack error put the ball back
in PC's court.
Shelley responded with an ace. Another error by McKown and a kill by Mabrey
gave the Blue Hose an 18-17 lead. The teams went back-and-forth until an attack
error by PC gave the home team a 22-21 lead.
Belshe then called a time-out, but two more attack errors gave the Cougars
match point. PC, however, would not go quietly. Barman slammed home a pass from
Ruppe as did Shelley, pulling the Blue Hose within one. The team could not tie
the set as Ginny Phillips' kill ended the match.
