CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College women's
soccer continued its strong play throughout the weekend to earn a 2-2 draw
against the Naval Academy Midshipmen. PC
led for over 80 minutes of the match as the Blue Hose withstood a 37-shot
barrage by the Mids. The match was
played under a scorching sun with a 90 degree ambient temperature and a heat
index reaching 106 degrees.
"I thought we
fought very well on a tough day to play with the heat," said head coach Brian
Purcell. "I think we gutted it out and
earned a draw against a very good Navy squad.
I'm proud of the effort of our team today."
The stands
were packed at the opening whistle as the Blue Hose kicked off the home
schedule. PC didn't wait long to give
the home faithful something to cheer about as senior Mel Martin's ball was
crossed into the six yard box towards freshman Sara Simpson. The attacker came together with a Navy
defender who touched the ball into the net and gave the Blue Hose their first
goal of the season just eight minutes into the match.
Just over ten
minutes later, PC tasted blood in the water as Simpson played a long-ball to
Kate Baker in space outside of the box.
She put a deke move the goalkeeper and waltzed around the netminder who
went to ground. The senior calmly pushed
the ball into the net to double the Blue Hose advantage after 18 minutes.
"Kate is
really just a finisher," added Purcell. "She
beat the goalkeeper on the dribble rather than panicking and taking an early
shot."
PC held the lead
into the intermission only taking five shots in the first half with just the
goal ending on frame. In contrast, Navy
took 12 shots in the opening half with four on target.
In the second
half, Navy attacked in search of a goal early in the period. The Mids earned a goal in the 59th
minute when Fallon Puppolo's corner kick was played to the top of the 18-yard
box. Christine Calderon received the
cross and ripped a low shot into traffic in front of the net. The ball found its way to the near post as
the Mids closed the gulf to 2-1.
PC mounted a
pair of solid attacks in the second half as Baker fed Simpson in the box for a
shot that went high and Jessica Kramer's shot from the corner of the 18-yard
box that just skirted the top of the crossbar and caught the top netting of the
goal.
Navy drew even
with just three minutes left as Katelyn George headed home Puppolo's second
assist of the game and knotted the teams at 2-2.
A corner kick
just 30-second off the restart gave Baker a chance to punch home the game
winner but the effort would fall wide and the final seconds would tick away.
In the first
overtime session, Navy earned the period's only shot, an effort by Sam
Newhaller that went wide.
For the final
sudden-victory overtime session, Navy cracked five shots including three that
needed the attention of PC's goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson. The junior netminder, making only her fifth
career start, made 17-saves to set a new career high in the category.
The Blue Hose
will return to action on Friday night on the road against Wofford. The contest starts at 7 p.m.
