LOUISVILLE, Ky. -Sean Mulford and Tyler Melnyk each scored four goals, but the
Presbyterian College men's lacrosse team was unable to defeat Bellarmine
Saturday afternoon, falling 17-12.
The Blue Hose now stand at 1-7 on the year while Bellarmine improves to 6-3.
PC was led by Mulford and Melnyk's four points. Both accounted for five shots
each, finding the back of the net on four occasions.
James Cupo and Derek Malone each had a goal and an assist while Andrew Athens dished
out two assists. Ben Sims and DJ Brown had a goal while Devin Pinkston tallied
an assist.
Billy Schilling picked up a team-best six ground balls while Cupo had four.
Cupo won 10 face-offs and Blake Studstill forced a match-high four turnovers.
In goal, Jon Athens had 12 saves while Bellarmine's two keepers combined to
stop five shots.
The home team jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but just after the second goal was
scored by Bellarmine, Cupo won the face-off and sprinted in, easily putting the
ball into the back of the net to make the score 2-1 with 10:39 to play in the
first quarter.
Neither team could score for nearly four minutes until Colton Clark put the
home team back ahead by two, 3-1.Bellarmine added two more goals before Derek
Malone was able to score unassisted, putting the action at 4-2.
Down by four five minutes into the second quarter, head coach Mike Gongas' team
went to work. Mulford scored his first goal of the day to make it 6-3. However,
Bellarmine answered right back with a score of its own. Then, with 2:38 left in
the half, Sims scored, bringing PC within three at 7-4. Nearly a minute later,
Melnyk fired home a shot. Then, Cupo assisted Mulford for another goal to bring
the Blue Hose within one at the break, 7-6.
The Blue Hose remained on fire to start the third quarter, evening the score on
Brown's goal. Bellarmine countered with two quick goals for a 9-7 advantage.
Malone then found Melnyk for a score, putting it at 9-8. However, PC would get
no closer as the home team gradually pulled away. Bellarmine outscored PC 10-6
in the final 30 minutes of action.
For the game, PC accounted for 14 clears while Bellarmine had 13. Each team had
22 turnovers in the contest.
The Blue Hose return to action Apr. 9 at Duke. Face-off is slated for 7 p.m.
