CLINTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College head men's golf coach Thomas Addison released PC's 2008-09 schedule on Tuesday, Aug. 12.
For the second consecutive year the men's golf team at PC will play in only NCAA Division I Tournaments.
The 2008-09 schedule is a great deal like PC's inaugural D-I schedule in 2007-08 with the Blue Hose playing in every tournament that they participated in last year except for the Wofford Invitational.
In place of the Wofford Invitational the Blue Hose have added two tournaments to their 2008-09 schedule. PC will now play in Campbell's Lonnie D. Small Classic (March 1-3) and East Carolina's Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate (April 2-5) for the first time in the spring of 2009.
“I am really excited about getting things underway this year,” said Addison. “For the most part we competed well in every tournament that we participated in last year and I am thinking we can even improve on that as we enter this year.”
The Blue Hose will play in the same four tournaments during the fall of 2008 as they did in the fall of 2007.
PC opens the fall portion of their schedule by playing in the Poplar Hill Intercollegiate (Sept. 7-9) hosted by Longwood. Last year, PC finished fourth overall in their first ever event as a D-I program. The Blue Hose had three players finish in the top 25 individually at the Poplar Hill Intercollegiate in 2007 led by Thomas Todd (Laurens, S.C.), who concluded the event tied for seventh with a three round tally of 220 (73-73-74).
PC continues its four tournament fall schedule with a trip to Francis Marion's Raines Development Group Intercollegiate (Sept. 14-16). The Blue Hose concluded the event seventh out of 16 teams in 2007.
After the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate the Blue Hose will have a month off before traveling to the Commonwealth of Virginia to play in the Frank Landrey Fall Intercollegiate for the second consecutive season. PC finished fifth at the tournament last year with Todd earning his second top 10 finish of the fall through three tournaments in 2007.
The Blue Hose will once again conclude their fall schedule with a trip to Charleston, S.C. to play in the CSU Fall Invitational (Oct. 19-21). PC finished fifth at the 2007 CSU Invitational with Todd once again leading the Blue Hose with a fifth place finish.
The fifth place team finish at the 2007 CSU Invitational left the Blue Hose concluding the fall portion of their 2007-08 schedule with three top five team finishes.
PC begins its spring schedule in 2009 with a return trip to the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate (Feb. 22-24). Hugh Morrison (Macon, Ga.) guided the Blue Hose to a fifth place team finish in last year's Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. Morrison finished in fifth individually.
The Blue Hose travel to the Lonnie D. Small Classic (March 1-3) for the first time in program history after the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. The tournament is hosted by Campbell and will be played at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek, N.C.
PC returns to the golf course one week later to play in the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate (March 8-10) for the sixth consecutive season. The tournament is hosted by PC's former NCAA Division II rival USC-Aiken.
The Blue Hose will return to the state of Alabama next for a return engagement at the Grub Mart Intercollegiate (March 15-17) hosted by Jacksonville State University. PC finished fourth as a team at the event in the spring of 2008 with Rob Varner (Columbus, Ga.) and Todd tying for sixth individually with a three-round score of 223.
PC will return to the Palmetto state next to play in the 40th Annual Furman Intercollegiate (March 26-29) at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. Todd led the Blue Hose at the 2008 Furman Intercollegiate with a 10th-place finish.
The Blue Hose after playing in the Furman Intercollegiate will open the month of April next by participating in the Ironwood Pirate Challenge (April 2-5).
Though they are not eligible to claim the championship due its transition into NCAA Division I athletics the Blue Hose will conclude their 2008-09 season by playing in the Big South Championship for the second straight year. The tournament is hosted by Coastal Carolina and is being played at The Patriot Golf Club in Greenwood, S.C.
Last year, Todd finished second overall at the Big South Tournament championship and the Blue Hose as a team ended the event in fourth place as a team.
Overall, as a team in 2007-08, PC finished in the top five as a team in seven of its 10 tournaments.
A senior last year, Morrison acquired PC's first ever individualist medalist honors at the D-I level when he finished first overall at the 21st Annual Coca-Cola Wofford invitational on April 1. He carded a three-round tally of six-under-par 210. The title was the second of Morrison's career.
