The Presbyterian College softball team scored a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to cut a four run deficit to just two, but the rally fell short with Longwood surviving for the 6-4 win in Big South action Friday afternoon in Clinton, S.C.  Chelsea Lyons led PC at the plate with a three-for-three effort and one RBI.

PC struck first with a lead-off double by Megan Anderson in the second inning.  She scored the next at bat off another double, this one from Lindsay Harris to put the Blue Hose up 1-0.  Harris came across home plate two batters later off a RBI single from Lyons as PC took a 2-0 lead.

 

Longwood rallied back in the third inning, with a RBI single by Kaylynn Batten to cut the lead to one.  A PC error two batters later brought in the tying run, with a two-RBI single from Kasey Carr giving Longwood a 4-2 lead.  Haleigh Kilby opened the fourth for Longwood with a single.  After reaching second on a sacrifice bunt, she scored off a Batten RBI single.  She scored the sixth run off a triple from Karleigh Donovan as the Lancers took the four run lead.

 

PC got a run back in the bottom of the sixth off a RBI groundout from Harris.  She scored Kelly Lucas who was pinch-running for Macy Hyatt.  Hyatt was on base off a one-out single.  A walk and two singles loaded the bases for PC in the bottom of the seventh inning.  A fielder’s choice by Ansley Wilbanks drove in PC’s fourth run of the game, but the next batter hit into another fielder’s choice to end the game with Longwood holding on for the 6-4 win.

 

Lyons led PC on offense with three hits and one RBI, with Harris recording a hit and two RBI.  Alex Cook (0-12) went 7.0 innings, giving up 10 hits and three earned runs.  She struck out four as the team finished the game with four runs, seven hits, and two errors.

 

Batten and Donovan led Longwood with three hits each, with Batten and Carr finishing with two RBI apiece.  The Lancers recorded six runs off 10 hits, with no errors.  Sydney Gay (18-8) went 4.0 innings in the win.  She surrendered just three hits and two earned runs.  Sydney Backstrom came in for 3.0 innings for her fourth save of the season.  She gave up two earned runs off four hits.

PC drops to 3-34 overall and 1-12 in the Big South, while Longwood improves to 26-13, 10-3.

PC rounds out the three-game series with Longwood with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.  The PC seniors will be honored between games.
