ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men’s tennis team dropped its regular season finale on Thursday, falling to Winthrop, 4-3, in Rock Hill, S.C. The Blue Hose finish the regular season 4-3 in Big South play, while the Eagles finished 7-0 to capture the league’s regular season title.
WU gained the early advantage by clinching the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Jaime Castillo-Lopez and Alejandro Bejar prevented the sweep with a competitive 7-5 victory on court two.
The two would split the six singles matches that saw three go to a third set, with PC coming out on top in two of three. Bejar put up the first point for PC with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 in his final regular season match for the Blue Hose.
Winthrop got wins in the next three matches to finish but it was that PC took the final two. Alexander Lykou got a W in his final regular season match, coming in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 1. Castillo-Lopez then finished off a three-set match, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5, to push the final margin to 4-3.
PC returns to action next week at the Big South Championship in Rock Hill, S.C., set to begin on Monday, April 16. The Blue Hose finished the regular season third in the Big South standings and is destined for a matchup with the six seed in the opening round of the tournament, expected to be Gardner-Webb. The league is set to announce the full championship bracket on Friday.
