The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team dropped its regular season finale on Saturday, falling to the Winthrop Eagles at the Templeton Center, 93-56. PC ends the regular season at 5-24 and 1-17 in the Big South. Winthrop improves to 23-6 over and 15-3 in league play.
Players of the Game
Ed Drew turned in his third double-double of the season, posting 10 rebounds to go with 13 points. Darius Moore scored 12 points, all coming from behind the three-point arc. Moore went 4-for-7 from downtown.
Reggie Dillard logged six assists, his second straight game with at least six helpers.
Roderick Perkins led Winthrop in scoring with 18 points. Keon Johnson and Anders Broman followed with 17 each while Duby Okeke’s six rebounds paced the Eagles on the glass.
Stat of the Game
Winthrop shot 52.5 from the field (31-for-59), including a 16-for-33 tally on three-pointers. The Blue Hose went 23-for-67 (34.3 percent) on the night, hitting from long range at a 7-for-24 (29.2 percent) clip.
How it Happened
Winthrop raced to a quick opening lead, going up 7-2 to start the game. Dillard and Drew worked to narrow the deficit in the early going, but the Blue Hose could not quiet Eagles’ offense.
Eight points from Xavier Cooks and six apiece from Anders Broman and Johnson helped Winthrop build a 25-13 lead midway through the opening half. Dillard accounted for more than half of PC’s scoring output in the first 10 minutes, scoring seven points and assisting on two other plays.
Winthrop’s lead hovered around the 15-point mark as the opening half wound down, eventually swelling to 21 with 4:34 to go.
Moore connected from long range three times in the final five minutes as PC looked to pull closer, but Winthrop would take its 21-point lead into the locker room at halftime, 49-28.
Moore’s nine points at the break would mark a team high, in front of Ed Drew’s eight. Johnson finished the first half with 15.
Winthrop’s lead grew to 30 soon after the start of the second on a Bjorn Broman three-pointer.
The lead grew to 36, but PC refused to lay down. Will Adams converted two drives to the hoop, including a spinning layup off the glass. Moore then struck again from downtown to make it 74-44 with 7:33 to go.
Will Adams posted eight points in the second half.
Winthrop shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) in the first half and connected eight times on 18 three-point shots.
Freshman center Armel Tete made his fourth straight start, extending his longest starting streak of his career. Tete blocked a shot in the second half, his 14th of the year.
PC matched Winthrop in second chance points, 13-13. The Blue Hose fell short in the paint, 26-22, while Winthrop capitalized for 18 points off turnovers to PC’s five and outscored the Blue Hose bench, 39-19.
