Clinton, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women’s lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Mercer, 23-13 Saturday afternoon at Old Bailey Stadium. The Blue Hose start their season with an 0-1 record, while the Bears grab their first of the season for a 1-0 record.

Alexandra Cole (Duluth, Ga.) led PC in the loss with four goals on six shots and added an assist and four ground balls. Lauren Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.) followed with three goals on seven shots, adding a ground ball and two draw controls. Cady Roberts (The Woodlands, Texas) tallied four assists with a draw control.

Meghan Segreti led the Bears in the win, netting seven goals on 10 shots and added a pair of assists. Kate Leone followed with four goals, followed by Lindsey Zeltwanger with three goals.

Mercer grabbed the early lead with a pair of quick goals. Claire Frase (Fort Mill, S.C.) then scored PC’s first goal of the season with 25:55 to play in the opening half. The teams the traded goals before the visitors scored three straight to push their lead to 6-2 at the 15:52 mark. The teams traded goals again before Kathleen Gerrits (Lake Worth, Fla.) netted back-to-back goals unassisted. The Bears then closed out the first 30 minutes of action with a pair of goals as Mercer led 9-5 at the break.

The Bears did not take the foot off the gas pedal as they started off the second half with a quick Lindsey Zeltwanger goal. Cole then recorded an unassisted goal and converted on a free-position shot to pull PC to within 10-7. That would be the closest that PC would get, though, as the Bears outscored the Blue Hose 14-8 in the second half.

Mercer outshot PC 39-34 and led in ground balls, 27-19. PC’s Kayla Koch (Annapolis, Md.) recorded 9 saves with one ground ball.
