The Winthrop men’s basketball team used a 17-0 run in the second half to break open a four-point game and take the 75-52 win over Presbyterian College in Big South action Wednesday night in Rock Hill, S.C. Ed Drew led the Blue Hose with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Stat of the Game
Winthrop hit 11 three-pointers, including seven in the second half, to take the 23-point lead. The Eagles posted a 53.1% field goal percentage in the second half, compared to 33.3% for PC. Winthrop would end the game with 45.9% to PC’s 31.0%.
Blue Hose Player of the Game
Ed Drew posted his first double-double of the season after leading the team with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He went five-of-nine from the field and hit five free throws. Jo’Vontae Millner and Ruven Arroyo each added 11 points on the night, with Millner connecting on a career-high three three-pointers.
How It Happened
Most of the first half was a back and forth battle with PC opening the game with five straight, which included a three-pointer from Will Adams, before Winthrop answered with a 9-2 run to build a 9-7 lead, just under 15 to play. A JC Younger three-pointer at 4:03 cut a five-point Winthrop lead to two again, but the Eagles closed out the half with a 10-3 run to go into the locker room leading 30-21.
PC outscored Winthrop 12-7 in the opening four and a half minutes of the second half to cut the margin to four, 34-37. The Eagles responded with 17 straight, which included four straight three-pointers from Keon Johnson, to open up a 21-point, 54-33 lead, 11:51 left. Jo’Vontae Millner cut the Winthrop lead to 18 off his second three-pointer of the night, but the Eagles scored the next 14 of the game’s 16 points to make it a 29-point lead, 70-41, 4:43 left. PC would cut the margin to 21 two times, off threes from Ruben Arroyo and Millner, but it would be the Eagles that would come out on top at the end, 75-52
PC out-rebounded Winthrop, 40-38 and held a 13-9 advantage in second-chance points.
For the Record
PC drops to 4-12 overall and 0-5 in the Big South, while Winthrop improves to 12-4, 4-1.
The Blue Hose head to High Point Saturday, Jan. 14, before returning home Thursday, Jan. 19, to take on Charleston Southern.
