Women's Tennis Earns Victories Over Newberry, Delaware State

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team took two wins on Saturday, besting Newberry by a 5-2 margin before handing Delaware State a 4-2 loss at the Templeton Tennis Courts.

PC evens its record at 2-2 on the year. The Blue Hose next host Savannah State on Tuesday afternoon. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.

PC 5, Newberry 2

The day began with a decisive 5-2 victory over Newberry. PC captured the doubles point by a 2-1 margin as Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) and Kayla Stanford (Canton, Ga.) blanked Shannon McManus and Christine Connelly at the third flight, 8-0. Haley Elliott (Greenville, S.C.) and Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) sewed up the point by handling Marina Ziehe and Tara Lamers, 8-1.

Newberry grabbed a top-flight doubles win, 8-2, as Susana Aguirre and Romina Adum pushed pashed Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) and Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.).

The Blue Hose then rolled to four singles wins en route to the final result. Elliott led off with a fifth-flight victory over McManus in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Stanford then followed with her first collegiate win by besting Connelly at the sixth flight, 6-0, 6-2.

Adum pulled out a third-flight over deLoach, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, to give Newberry its first point of the day. PC answered, however, with Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) sealing the win by knocking off Zehie, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Krause grabbed her first win of the season in a gutsy victory over Lamers, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). The match came to a close as Aguirre held off a battling Alves, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

PC 4, Delaware State 2

The Blue Hose swept the doubles point and grabbed two singles wins. With the match already in hand, rain ended the fifth-flight match before the players could decide a final result.

In doubles action, Ransom and Krause held off Maja Banas and Kristina Aleksic, 8-7 (7-5) at No. 1 while Elliott and Alves also pulled out an identical result. Both pairs trailed by 5-6 margins before coming back for the wins.

At No. 3, deLoach and Stanford rallied from down 5-2 to bump off Andonova and Kozlova, 8-5.

In singles play, Alves rolled past Aleksic, 6-3, 6-2 at the second flight while Ransom handled Banas at the top flight, 6-4, 6-2.

Krause sealed the win for PC at the fourth flight. The senior dispatched Andonova at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4.

Leahy also rallied from behind in her singles match against Sicic at No. 5. Down 5-2, Leahy won the first set 7-6 (7-5) before Siric won the second, 6-4. Rain then stopped play for good.
