STATESBORO, Ga. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis
team dropped an early-season non-conference road match on Sunday afternoon, falling
to Georgia Southern, 6-1.
PC moves to 0-2 on the season while Georgia Southern begins
its season at 1-0.
Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) grabbed the team's only
point with a marathon win at the third flight. deLoach came up short in the
first set to M. Phillips Smith, 4-6, but rallied to take the rest of the match
6-4, 1-0 (10-5). The win marks the sophomore's first of the season.
The Blue Hose battled hard in doubles play and lost by
narrow margins. Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) and Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.)
nearly toppled Paola Garrido and Caitlin Kitchen at the top flight, 8-5, while
Kayla Stanford (Canton, Ga.) and deLoach found themselves edged at No. 3 by
Jordana Klein and Alexis Pricket, 8-6.
Georgia Southern's Stephanie Woods and Natatlie Maffett won
at No. 2 over Haley Elliott (Greenville, S.C.) and Patricia Alves (Campinas,
Brazil), 8-1.
In singles action, Garrido bested Ransom at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2,
while Krause fell to Woods at No. 4 by the same result.
Avles dropped a second-flight match to Klein, 6-0, 6-2, and
Elliott fell to F. Norregaard by an identiclal score.
At the fifth flight, Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) dropped a
matchup to Maffett, 6-1, 6-0.
The Blue Hose will next host Newberry and Delaware State in
a Saturday doubleheader on February 2. The day begins with a 9 a.m. first serve
against Newberry.
