CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team
took part in four events over the fall season, collecting wins and working to
improve in preparation for the spring season.
After beginning the fall at the UNC Asheville Bulldog
Invitational, the Blue Hose headed to Spartanburg for the USC Upstate Fall
Classic. Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) helped to pick up an 8-4 doubles win over
the host Spartans. Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) also notched a 6-3, 6-1
win over Wofford's Mareli Sanchez in singles play while Kayla Stanford (Canton,
Ga.) knocked off Wofford's Tessa Johnson in a 6-3, 6-2 result.
Next for PC came the Appalachian State Fall Invitational.
Freshman Haley Elliott (Greenville, S.C.) defeated Carson Shell of Appalachian
State, 8-2, and dropped two hard-fought contests to East Carolina players by
8-6 and 8-5 margins. In doubles action, Elliott helped to grab victories over
pairs from Appalachian State and East Carolina en route to winning the fourth
flight.
PC ended the fall at the Club at Raes Creek Invitational in
Augusta, Ga. The first day got off to a strong start as Alves and Elliott
notched an 8-5 victory over a doubles pair from Virginia tech while Caroline
deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) and Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) knocked off their
Wofford opponents, 8-5.
The second day saw several more Blue Hose victories. Elliott
bore down and held to a three-set win against Wofford's Tessa Johnson, 6-3,
4-6, 6-2. Alves also grabbed a win over the Terriers' Guinn Garcia by a 6-3,
6-3 margin.
Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.) offered an impressive shower,
cruising past Virginia Tech's Laura Ramthun, 6-0, 6-1, before dropping a
three-set battle to Lucky Schermerhorn of Wofford, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 4-6.
Leahy grabbed one more win at the event over Ramthun, 6-2,
6-2. Alves also played to a tough three-set loss against Virginia Tech's Emily
Lauten, 6-4, 2-6, (10-2).
The Blue Hose begin the spring season at home against USC
Upstate on Saturday, January 26 at 1 p.m.
